CAF Confederation Cup First Legs Leave Several Ties on a Knife-Edge

3 hours ago·2 min

The TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup Preliminary Round first legs produced a mixed bag of results on Saturday, with some sides establishing commanding leads and others leaving their ties wide open heading into the return fixtures next weekend.

Big winners from Saturday

Togolese club ASKO de Kara delivered the most emphatic performance of the weekend, routing AS ZAM of Niger 5-0 away from home to put one foot firmly in the next round. Al Ahly Tripoli — bolstered by several new signings — were equally impressive, cruising to a 3-0 victory at Zanzibar's KMKM.

Angola provided two of the day's most convincing results. Primeiro de Agosto claimed a 2-0 win away at Eswatini's Green Mamba, while Kabuscorp de Palanca defeated Namibia's UNAM by the same scoreline. Zambia's Red Arrows also secured a healthy 2-0 home advantage against FC Rouge of Madagascar at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, with Eliya Mundanji heading the opener in the 39th minute and Alassane Diarra adding a second in the 57th. The winners of that tie will meet South Africa's Kaizer Chiefs in the Second Preliminary Round.

Tight contests to watch

Shooting Stars of Nigeria edged CS Sfaxien of Tunisia 1-0 at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, with Lucky Emmanuel netting the only goal in the 25th minute. Despite holding the advantage, the Nigerian side face a demanding away trip in the second leg.

The meeting between AS Douanes of Mauritania and Hafia FC of Guinea ended 2-2, handing the Guinean visitors a valuable away goal ahead of their home leg. The pair are set to meet CR Belouizdad of Algeria in the Second Preliminary Round, should Haifa FC progress.

Elsewhere, Black Bulls of Mozambique edged Atomic Ngomé of Comoros 1-0 in the away leg, and Mali's FC Diarra carry a narrow 1-0 lead into the return fixture against Nations FC of Ghana.
