Cagliari midfielder Yael Trepy, 20, is in intensive care at a hospital in Sardinia after nearly drowning in a private swimming pool, according to multiple Italian media reports.
The incident occurred at a mansion on the island while Trepy was on a two-day break the club had granted its players following Friday's 1-0 Coppa Italia victory over Arezzo — a match in which Trepy featured for 53 minutes before being substituted.
Italian publications La Repubblica and L'Unione Sarda report that Trepy is not a confident swimmer and found himself in difficulty at the deep end of the pool, losing consciousness before emergency services were called. He was subsequently airlifted to hospital.
Club statement
Cagliari Calcio confirmed the situation in an official statement, revealing that Trepy is being treated at the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari.
