Cape Verde's World Cup Journey Becomes the Tournament's Greatest Story

1 hour ago·2 min

Cape Verde are writing one of football's most remarkable chapters — and with one group game remaining, they stand on the brink of something extraordinary.

The Blue Sharks had already stunned the world by holding Spain in their World Cup debut, a result that represented the largest ranking gap ever recorded in a game where the higher-ranked side failed to win. On Sunday, they followed it up with an equally impressive 2-2 draw against Uruguay, a two-time World Cup champion, and are now firmly in the frame for a place in the knockout rounds.

A performance to remember

From the opening whistle, Cape Verde played with attacking intent — pressing Uruguay relentlessly and creating consistent danger. The South American giants were forced onto the back foot, a sight few would have anticipated before kick-off.

The first goal arrived in stunning fashion. Kevin Pina stepped up to strike a free-kick from 30 yards, and Uruguay's wall parted as they jumped, leaving a gap through the middle that his driven effort arrowed into past goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Back in the capital, Praia, supporters erupted in scenes of pure joy.

The second goal came courtesy of a lucky gift, but Helio Varela made no mistake — a deft touch took the ball past the stranded Muslera before Varela rolled it into the net to level the scores.

Cape Verde then produced the same defensive resolve that earned them their famous point against Spain, holding firm while continuing to press for a winner. They limited Uruguay to just two shots on target — an extraordinary feat against such experienced opposition.

Goalkeeper Vozinha, who became a viral sensation after the Spain game — growing from 40,000 Instagram followers to more than 15 million — was rarely called upon this time. His mother, unable to attend the Spain match due to the high cost of obtaining a US visa, was in the stands in Miami to witness another historic display.

Pundits left speechless

Both former South Africa striker Benni McCarthy and former Wales defender Ashley Williams had predicted defeat for Cape Verde before kick-off — a script the Blue Sharks tore up entirely.

McCarthy did not hold back in his praise afterwards.
