Cape Verde Stun Spain With Goalless Draw at World Cup 2026

2 hours ago·1 min

Cape Verde have delivered the biggest upset of the 2026 World Cup so far, holding European champions Spain to a goalless draw in their Group H opener in Atlanta.

Luis De La Fuente's side — who named Lamine Yamal among their substitutes — dominated possession in the first half but found no way through a compact and disciplined Blue Sharks defence. Ferran Torres came closest, striking the crossbar from close range.

Vozinha the hero for Cape Verde

Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha was the standout figure for the World Cup debutants, producing a sharp reaction save to deny Torres before tipping away a glancing header from Aymeric Laporte following a corner kick. His displays kept Spain at bay throughout the opening period.

Yamal — sidelined since April with a hamstring injury that also caused him to miss the final weeks of Barcelona's LaLiga title run — was introduced with 20 minutes remaining as Spain searched for a breakthrough.

His arrival failed to unlock the Blue Sharks, however, as Cape Verde held firm to claim a historic point in their first-ever World Cup appearance.
