Carlos Queiroz Parts Ways With Ghana Again After Damaging AFCON Qualifying Losses

2 hours ago·1 min

Carlos Queiroz has resigned as head coach of Ghana's Black Stars for the second time in under a year, after a bruising run of AFCON 2027 qualifying results brought his second spell in charge to an abrupt end.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed the departure in a joint statement, describing the contract termination as mutual and reached in a spirit of shared respect. The GFA said it would announce its technical plans for the Black Stars' leadership in due course.

A turbulent second chapter

Queiroz's return to the role had already been short-lived and eventful. He first took charge in April, succeeding Otto Addo — who was sacked — with only weeks to spare before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With minimal preparation time, he guided Black Stars to the last-32 of the tournament, where they were eliminated by Colombia.

He resigned immediately after that exit, only to reverse course and sign a fresh contract on September 2 — just eight weeks later. That surprise U-turn granted him two further competitive matches.

Both ended in defeat. Ghana lost 2-0 to Ivory Coast and then suffered a damaging 4-2 home loss to Gambia, leaving the Black Stars with an aggregate of 6-2 against them across those two AFCON qualifying fixtures.

GFA pays tribute

In their official statement, the GFA thanked Queiroz for his professionalism and dedication, highlighting his work ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and his efforts to develop Ghanaian talent during his time in charge.
