Carragher's 'I'd Rather Cheat and Win' Quote Resurfaces Amid Manchester City Crusade

1 hour ago·2 min

Jamie Carragher has been swept into an online controversy after old remarks of his about the will to win — at any cost — resurfaced in sharp contrast to his vocal criticism of Manchester City's financial rule-breaking.

An independent commission recently found Manchester City guilty of 114 breaches of Premier League financial regulations over a nine-season period. The verdict sent shockwaves through English football, and Carragher wasted no time positioning himself among the club's most outspoken critics.

Carragher calls for City's titles to be stripped

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Liverpool defender argued that Manchester City's domestic honours from that era should be formally removed from the record books. "I do think Manchester City's titles they've won in this time, or trophies, should be taken off their list," he said.

Carragher went further, insisting that the players who won medals under City during the period in question have been robbed of something irreplaceable — the genuine emotional memory of victory. "Those players will never get that feeling and it was robbed by Manchester City," he argued. "I've been very lucky to win a few medals. I never look at the medal years later. But my mind goes back to a moment, I get a feeling in my stomach. I remember the referee blowing a final whistle of a big game."

Old podcast clip tells a different story

However, an old clip from Steven Bartlett's The Diary of a CEO podcast, recorded in 2022, has since gone viral — and it paints a rather different picture of Carragher's attitude toward fair play.

In the clip, the Liverpool legend spoke candidly about his win-at-all-costs mentality as a player. "I'd rather cheat and win, than not win — and I don't think I'll ever be any different," Carragher said. He added that this fierce, uncompromising drive had carried him to emotional highs that still move him deeply.

The remarks were not made in reference to Manchester City's charges, and were clearly rooted in the dressing-room psychology of elite competition. Nevertheless, social media users were quick to place the two statements side by side, highlighting the uncomfortable tension between them.

A contradiction that cuts both ways

Carragher has spent weeks arguing that trophies earned outside the rules are meaningless — that they carry no emotional weight and taint the legacies of those who wore the shirt. Yet his own 2022 admission that he would sooner cheat than lose sits uneasily alongside that position.

Whether one agrees with his stance on Manchester City or not, the resurfaced clip has given his critics ample ammunition, and the debate over sporting integrity — both on the pitch and in the boardroom — shows no sign of quieting down.
