Carrick's Defining Month: How Baleba Could Rescue Manchester United's Season

Manchester United enter a pivotal stretch of fixtures in October, and the pressure on head coach Michael Carrick is mounting with every passing week. A sluggish start to the Premier League campaign — five points from five matches — has left the club in a precarious position, and one more poor result could trigger serious questions about Carrick's tenure at Old Trafford.
A month that could define the season
The schedule ahead is both daunting and full of opportunity. United begin Saturday with a home match against a winless Tottenham Hotspur, before travelling to face Atletico Madrid, Leeds United, and Como. The month closes out with fixtures against Bournemouth and Chelsea — a brutal run that could either cement Carrick's critics or silence them entirely.
Carrick has cited a string of misfortunes as partial explanation for the slow start, but patience in the stands and in the boardroom is wearing thin. The international break was, at the very least, a chance for players to rediscover form, fitness, and confidence.
Attacking options begin to open up
Matheus Cunha has struggled for consistency this season, arguably hampered by being deployed centrally rather than in his preferred left-wing role. With Brazil not calling on him during the break, Cunha had the time to reset — and Carrick now has the personnel to put him back in a more natural position.
Amad Diallo's return to fitness is a significant development. With Amad available on the right, Bryan Mbeumo can push back through the middle, creating a direct contest between Cunha and Marcus Rashford — fitness permitting — for the left-flank role. It is the kind of attacking flexibility that has been absent from Old Trafford this season.
Benjamin Sesko's limited availability has also restricted Carrick's hand, while injury concerns surround Noussair Mazraoui, Patrick Dorgu, Rashford, and Kobbie Mainoo following the international window. Just how many players will be available on Saturday remains a key question ahead of Friday's press conference.
Baleba's arrival could be the missing piece
Perhaps the most significant development of the break is the imminent debut of summer signing Carlos Baleba. The £65 million midfielder, who joined from Brighton, suffered an ankle injury in pre-season but has used the international window to acclimatise to life at Carrington.
Baleba has reportedly settled well among United's players and staff, and his first broadcast appearance as a United player this week — alongside Amad — suggests he is close to featuring competitively. Carrick will decide the timing, but the expectation is that Baleba could be available as early as Saturday.
The current midfield axis of Youri Tielemans and Mainoo has shown promise in certain contexts — particularly at home, where United control the tempo — but it lacks the defensive solidity and driving power that Casemiro brought before his summer departure. Baleba is the player United hope can fill that void.
Defensively, his physicality and reading of the game should better shield a back line that has conceded too freely, especially on the counter. But his impact going forward could be equally significant. During his best periods at Brighton, Baleba impressed consistently with his range of passing and his ability to carry the ball through midfield — qualities that have been sorely lacking at United for years.
It is early to make sweeping declarations, but with the schedule United face this month, Baleba could prove to be their most important piece of summer business — and the spark that finally gets this season moving in the right direction.
