Celtic will face Benfica and Marseille in the UEFA Europa League this season, while Edinburgh's Hearts will battle Monaco and Trabzonspor in the UEFA Conference League — two Scottish clubs with contrasting European paths entering the league phase.

Celtic's Europa League campaign

Celtic dropped into the Europa League after surrendering a four-goal lead against LASK in the Champions League play-off, a collapse that ended their ambitions of reaching the group stage of Europe's premier club competition.

In the league phase, Celtic will face eight opponents — four at home and four away. Their fixtures include trips to Benfica and Union SG, as well as home games against Marseille, Ferencvaros, Celta Vigo, and Besiktas, alongside away fixtures at Omonia and Torreense.

Celtic begin their Europa League campaign next month, with a top-eight finish their target to secure automatic qualification for the round of 16.

Hearts into the Conference League

Hearts endured a difficult qualifying campaign, exiting both the Champions League and Europa League qualifying rounds before defeating Rapid Vienna on penalties to secure their place in the Conference League league phase.

Their six-fixture schedule — three at home, three away — includes a home tie against Monaco, an away clash at Trabzonspor, and further fixtures against Pafos, Borac, Nordsjaelland, and Thun. Hearts begin their Conference League campaign in October.

How the league phases work

In the Europa League, each of the 36 participating clubs plays eight matches — four at home and four away. The top eight sides at the end of the league phase advance directly to the round of 16, while teams finishing between ninth and 24th enter a two-legged knockout play-off. Any team finishing 25th or below is eliminated and cannot drop into another European competition.

The Conference League operates on a slightly condensed format: all 36 clubs play six matches — three at home and three away. The qualifying structure mirrors that of the Europa League, with the top eight progressing automatically to the last 16 and ninth through 24th-placed sides entering the play-offs.
