The redesigned UEFA Champions League is producing goals at a rate not seen in the competition's modern history — and perhaps barely matched across the entire European Cup era.
The numbers behind the boom
Through the opening matchdays of the 2025-26 campaign, the competition has seen 187 goals at an average of 4.16 per game — the highest goals-per-game ratio ever recorded in Champions League history.
To find a more prolific rate in European football, you have to reach back to 1959-60 (4.19 goals per game) and 1955-56 (4.38), making this the third most free-scoring campaign in European Cup history.
Last week's second matchday was the most prolific single round in Champions League history. Tuesday and Wednesday combined for 78 goals — nine more than the opening matchday of this same season, which had itself set a record at the time.
Wednesday alone ranked as the third highest-scoring single day in Champions League history, with 46 goals across the evening's fixtures.
