Chelle Backs Portugal as Potential World Cup Winners Ahead of Nigeria Friendly

last week·1 min

Nigeria Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has declared that Portugal have every ingredient needed to be crowned the next FIFA World Cup champions — high praise ahead of Wednesday night's international friendly between the two sides in Leiria.

Portugal, known as Seleção das Quinas, are widely regarded as one of the frontrunners to unseat reigning world champions Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be hosted across Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

Roberto Martinez's squad combines experience and youth, featuring veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo, midfield orchestrators Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, and emerging talents Vitinha and João Neves.

At his pre-match press conference, Chelle spoke at length about the depth and balance he sees within Martinez's ranks, covering every area of the pitch.
