Chelsea are weighing up a free transfer move for England international John Stones, who departed Manchester City when his contract expired at the end of June, according to BBC Sport.

The west London club have emerged as contenders alongside Inter Milan for the 32-year-old centre-back, now available at no transfer cost after nine years at the Etihad Stadium.

A crowded market for central defenders

Chelsea's defensive recruitment is not limited to Stones. The club are in active talks with Crystal Palace over a deal for Maxence Lacroix, while Como's Jacobo Ramon is also on their radar as they survey the market for reinforcements.

To accommodate new arrivals, Chelsea are simultaneously looking to trim their defensive options. Trevoh Chalobah, a fellow England international, is in discussions to move to Como, while Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile have both been made available for transfer.

Stones's decorated career at City

Stones joined Manchester City from Everton for £47.5 million in 2016 and went on to make 295 appearances for the club. His haul of honours at the Etihad Stadium was extraordinary — six Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.

The former Barnsley defender has also earned 93 caps for England, including a run to the third-place finish at the World Cup. Whether his next chapter takes him to Stamford Bridge or the San Siro remains to be seen.
