Chelsea Goalkeeper Martinez Stretchered Off After Frightening Head Collision at Everton

40 minutes ago·1 min

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was rushed to hospital following a frightening head-to-head collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during their Premier League clash on Merseyside.

The incident unfolded when Martinez charged off his line to claim an aerial ball into the Everton box, meeting Branthwaite — who was also attacking the cross — with a sickening clash of heads. Both players immediately fell to the ground, prompting urgent concern from medical staff on both sides.

Branthwaite recovered after several minutes and was able to return to action following concussion checks performed by Everton's medical team. Martinez, however, remained on his back as Chelsea physios and club doctors worked carefully around him before calling for the stretcher.

Martinez receives oxygen on the pitch

The Argentine was administered oxygen on the pitch before being stretchered off the field approximately 10 minutes after the collision. Broadcaster TNT Sports, who chose not to air a close-up replay of the incident, confirmed he was taken directly to a local hospital in Liverpool.

Encouragingly, Martinez appeared conscious and was seen moving his arms as he was carried down the tunnel — a sign that offered some reassurance to supporters and teammates watching on.

Xabi Alonso provides an update

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso addressed the situation in his post-match interview with TNT Sports:
