Chelsea have secured the services of France international Maxence Lacroix, completing a £52m move for the Crystal Palace centre-back on a deal that runs until 2032 at Stamford Bridge.

The 26-year-old arrives having earned seven caps for France, including three appearances during the FIFA World Cup 2026 — among them the third-place play-off against England, in which Les Bleus finished fourth.

Lacroix had originally moved to Crystal Palace from Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga in 2024 for an initial £15.5m. Under manager Oliver Glasner, he established himself as a first-team regular, making 55 appearances across all competitions as Palace claimed the UEFA Conference League — the club's first major European trophy.

A third summer arrival

The Frenchman becomes Chelsea's third confirmed signing of the summer transfer window, following Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra to west London. The club is preparing for its first campaign under new head coach Xabi Alonso after finishing 10th in the Premier League last season — a disappointing return that left supporters frustrated.

Two further deals, for winger Geovany Quenda and forward Emmanuel Emegha, were agreed during 2025 and both players formally completed their moves this month. Chelsea are also understood to be in advanced talks with Brighton striker Danny Welbeck and Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson.

A shift in recruitment strategy

Lacroix's arrival represents a conscious change in direction for Chelsea's ownership. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali had spoken of a desire to "tweak" the club's model by adding experience alongside a young core that includes Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo, and Levi Colwill.

At 26, Lacroix is the oldest player signed under the current ownership — a landmark that underlines how significantly the club's recruitment thinking has evolved. Chelsea also made an approach for Granit Xhaka, 34, at Sunderland, a move that would have been almost unthinkable under their previous recruitment strategy and a clear sign that the club is no longer exclusively targeting younger profiles.

While John Stones of Manchester City and Como's Jacobo Ramon were reportedly considered, Lacroix — standing at 6ft 4in and offering physicality and leadership — was always Chelsea's preferred option. Lengthy negotiations over both personal terms and the fee with Crystal Palace had added uncertainty, but the defender gave the move his approval following France's exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Together with Rogers, who turned 24 recently and cost £117m, the signing of Lacroix fulfils Chelsea's stated aim of bringing in at least two experienced, ready-made players during this transfer window.
