Chelsea have wrapped up the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a landmark £117m deal, making the 23-year-old forward the most expensive British player in football history.

Rogers has committed to a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, surpassing the record set just weeks earlier when Elliot Anderson completed a £116m move to Manchester City this summer.

Rogers excited about Chelsea's project

The England international wasted no time expressing his enthusiasm. "I'm so excited," Rogers said. "For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I've always admired since I was a kid."

"I'm really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we've got and where the club is heading. That's why I'm here and I can't wait to get started."

Arsenal beaten to their top target

Chelsea's rivals Arsenal had earmarked Rogers as their primary attacking target this summer, but the Gunners were not prepared to meet the fee that Chelsea ultimately agreed. The deal represents a significant coup for manager Xabi Alonso, whose side will not feature in European competition during the 2026/27 season.

Rogers departs Aston Villa — who will play in the Champions League next season — to move to a Chelsea side that faces a rebuilding year on the domestic stage.

A versatile talent with a strong pedigree

Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris hailed the move as a major statement of intent. "It's a great signing for Chelsea. And maybe a bit of a surprise — purely because of the fact that he is coming in from a team that's playing in the Champions League next year, and obviously looking at the reports that Arsenal were very much after his signature," Morris told Sky Sports News.

Morris highlighted Rogers's journey from Manchester City's academy through a breakthrough spell under Michael Carrick at Middlesbrough, before the forward truly announced himself at the highest level under Unai Emery at Aston Villa.

"He's a huge, huge talent," Morris added. "I think he can play in the No 10 role, he can play both sides of the wings and — like we've seen in the last England game — he almost played like a number eight. There's nothing wrong with having players that are versatile and he is certainly one of them."

Rogers will now link up at Stamford Bridge with his England teammate Cole Palmer, as Chelsea continue their significant summer investment.
