Chelsea Target Lewis Hall to Fill Marc Cucurella Void, Frustrating Manchester United

2 hours ago·2 min

Chelsea are stepping up their search for a new left-back this summer after Marc Cucurella completed his transfer to Real Madrid, with the club understood to be pursuing a familiar face — former academy product Lewis Hall.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Chelsea are prepared to spend around £60 million to bring Hall back to Stamford Bridge from Newcastle United. The 21-year-old only departed Stamford Bridge in 2024 for a fee of roughly £35 million, following a highly successful loan spell with the Magpies.

Newcastle under pressure to sell

Newcastle United are said to be facing pressure to offload players in order to comply with PSR financial regulations, which could force them into selling Hall at a significant profit on what they originally paid. The club have already raised £70 million this summer through the sale of Anthony Gordon.

Hall and his representatives are reportedly open to a move ahead of the 2026/27 season. His options this summer are plentiful after he was left out of England's FIFA World Cup 2026 squad — a surprise omission for many observers.

Manchester United rivalry for Hall

Chelsea's interest puts them in direct competition with Manchester United, who have also placed Hall on their shortlist for the left-back position. The pursuit of Hall by the Blues could yet deny Michael Carrick's side their preferred target.

Chelsea's need for a left-back became pressing after they missed out on Nathaniel Brown, who chose to join Bayern Munich instead. The club are now focused on Hall as their primary option.

Alternative targets in the frame

Despite Hall being the front-runner, Chelsea have other names under consideration. New manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly keen to reunite with Alex Grimaldo, the Bayer Leverkusen wing-back he worked with previously — although Grimaldo is now 30 years old. Juventus wing-back Andrea Cambiaso is another name on Chelsea's recruitment list, valued partly for his versatility on both flanks.

How quickly the Hall situation moves may well hinge on how urgently Newcastle need to raise funds — and whether Chelsea can move faster than Manchester United.
