Australia international Cristian Volpato has allegedly tested positive for cocaine following two separate traffic stops by New South Wales police in a single night in Sydney, according to Mirror.

Police records indicate that officers first stopped Volpato at around 11pm after his vehicle was recorded travelling at between 86 and 94 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. A roadside breathalyser test at that point returned a negative result.

Approximately two hours later, at around 1am, Volpato was stopped a second time — this time while allegedly driving at 109 km/h on the Anzac Bridge, which carries a 60 km/h speed limit. A roadside drug test conducted during this second stop allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine. A second sample was taken for further laboratory analysis.

Licence suspended, no criminal charges filed

The 22-year-old midfielder received a speeding fine and had his international driver's licence suspended for six months, barring him from driving in New South Wales. No criminal charges have been laid against him, though police confirmed their enquiries are ongoing.

In a statement relayed by Australian broadcaster ABC, Football Australia said it "was aware of the allegations involving one of our players."

A World Cup campaign with the Socceroos

Volpato represented Australia at this summer's FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America, making three appearances during the tournament. He was an unused substitute in the opening group game against Turkey before featuring in the remaining group matches against the United States and Paraguay. Australia's campaign ultimately ended in a round-of-32 penalty shootout defeat to Egypt.

Volpato only recently committed to Australia at senior level, having previously represented Italy through the youth ranks. He switched international allegiances in May, and his sole appearance for the Socceroos before the World Cup came in a warm-up match against Switzerland in June.
