Crystal Palace Close to Appointing Lens Boss Pierre Sage as New Manager

Crystal Palace are on the verge of confirming Pierre Sage as their new head coach, with the Premier League club finalising the financial terms that will secure the Lens manager's move to south London.
BBC Sport revealed earlier that Palace had entered discussions with the 47-year-old Frenchman as they sought a successor to Oliver Glasner, who departed Selhurst Park at the end of the 2024-25 season.
Sage's impressive record at Lens
Sage arrived at Lens 12 months ago and wasted no time making his mark. Under his guidance, the club achieved a second-place finish in Ligue 1 and claimed the Coupe de France — their first domestic cup triumph in 120 years of existence.
His attacking style of play is expected to resonate with Palace supporters, and his command of English is understood to be strong enough to ensure a smooth transition at Selhurst Park.
A busy summer of managerial talks
Palace's pursuit of a new manager has taken several turns. The Eagles had targeted former Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola, but he committed to a two-year deal with Liverpool earlier this month, ending that possibility.
The club also held conversations with Frank Lampard, currently in charge at Coventry, former Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, and Sean Dyche — who has previously managed Burnley, Nottingham Forest, and Everton — before Sage emerged as the preferred candidate.
Europa League football and squad uncertainty
Palace's UEFA Conference League triumph means they will compete in the UEFA Europa League next season, adding greater urgency to the managerial appointment and squad planning.
Several key players' futures remain unresolved. France forward Jean-Philippe Mateta enters the final year of his contract with no extension agreed, while England midfielder Adam Wharton has attracted interest from multiple Premier League clubs.
The club have also tabled a new contract offer to Japan international Daichi Kamada, whose deal expired at the end of the last campaign.
