Danny Röhl Departs for RB Salzburg as Rangers Close In on Derek McInnes

3 days ago·2 min

Rangers have confirmed the departure of head coach Danny Röhl to Austrian side RB Salzburg, with the Ibrox club now finalising a deal to appoint Derek McInnes as his successor.

Röhl, 37, heads to the Austrian Bundesliga despite having previously insisted he was committed to overseeing a rebuild at Rangers this summer. He had two years remaining on his contract at Ibrox and had been given assurances over his future at the club — yet Rangers chiefs had been quietly reviewing their managerial options since May.

His exit marks yet another chapter of instability in the dugout at Ibrox. Röhl becomes the fifth permanent manager to depart since Steven Gerrard — the last coach to deliver a Scottish Premiership title to the club — left in November 2021. Röhl himself had only been in post since October, when he was brought in to replace Russell Martin.

A difficult season at Ibrox

The season under Röhl did not go to plan. Rangers finished third in the Scottish Premiership and were eliminated by Celtic in the League Cup semi-finals before suffering another defeat to their Old Firm rivals at the quarter-final stage of the Scottish Cup — failing to reach the final of either cup competition.

McInnes set to take charge

McInnes is now on the verge of taking over as Rangers' new head coach, with the club and Hearts working to finalise the terms of his move. He has agreed a three-year contract at Ibrox, according to reports.

Summer rebuild already under way

Despite the managerial upheaval, Rangers have been active in reshaping the club's structure this summer. New CEO Jim Gillespie, executive director Fraser Thornton, technical director Dan Purdy, and consultant Stig Inge Bjørnebye have all come on board to work alongside the coaching setup.

On the pitch, Scotland international Lawrence Shankland became the club's first confirmed signing of the window, arriving from Hearts on a two-year deal with an option for a further 12 months. The striker, who scored 20 goals in all competitions last season, moved to Ibrox for free following the activation of a release clause in his Hearts contract.
