Arsenal are anxiously monitoring the fitness of midfielder Declan Rice after he limped off during the closing stages of their 1-0 Premier League win over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Monday night.

Bukayo Saka's 59th-minute strike was enough to secure all three points for Mikel Arteta's side, but the victory carried a worrying price tag. Rice was withdrawn in the 85th minute, visibly struggling as he left the pitch, with Martin Zubimendi introduced as his replacement.

The substitution was not an isolated concern. Just six minutes before Rice's exit, centre-back Cristhian Mosquera had gone down clutching his thigh and was replaced by Ezri Konsa — handing Arteta a double injury headache in the space of a single half.

A summer of physical strain

Arsenal have yet to confirm whether Rice's withdrawal was precautionary or the result of a more significant muscle strain, but the circumstances have understandably raised concern.

Rice endured persistent fitness difficulties throughout the summer while representing England at the 2026 World Cup, where he reportedly battled neural pain affecting his lower back and hamstrings. Those problems are believed to have stemmed from an exceptionally demanding 2025/26 season, during which he made 55 appearances for Arsenal — 49 of them starts.

Compounding the worry is the limited recovery time Rice had between international duty and his return to club football. England's final World Cup fixture fell on July 18, yet Rice had fewer than four weeks of rest before linking up with Arsenal for pre-season and appearing in the Community Shield against Manchester City on August 16.

Arsenal already short at the back

The timing of Rice's knock is particularly alarming given Arsenal's wider injury picture. William Saliba has already been ruled out for the foreseeable future after sustaining a back injury during the World Cup, and losing Rice on top of that would represent a severe blow to Arteta's squad.

Arteta will be hoping that further assessment reveals nothing serious, with Arsenal facing a demanding fixture schedule in the weeks ahead.
