Doku Wants to Be There for His Child's Birth — Even If Belgium Are Still in the World Cup

Jeremy Doku has opened up about one of the most personal dilemmas of his professional career: his wife is expecting their first child in early July, right when the FIFA World Cup 2026 could be reaching its quarterfinal stage — and Doku has made clear he does not want to miss the moment.
The 24-year-old Manchester City winger is a key figure in Belgium's attacking setup and is set to make his World Cup debut when Belgium face Egypt in Seattle on Monday. But beyond the football, a far more profound milestone looms on the horizon.
Belgian media, citing Reuters, reported that the Belgian federation has begun drawing up contingency plans that would allow Doku to temporarily leave the United States and return home for the birth if necessary.
"Nobody wants to miss the birth of their first child"
Speaking to reporters, Doku confirmed that his wife Shireen is due in the second week of July — a period that aligns with the quarterfinal stage of the tournament. His message was candid and heartfelt.
"It depends on when it happens, but it's my first child, so I would definitely want to be there," he said. "If you ask me what I want, my answer is that nobody wants to miss the birth of their first child. But I also know that football involves many other considerations."
Doku also acknowledged the support coming from his federation. "I know the federation supports its players and understands their situations. We'll see what we can do," he added.
Belgium's World Cup ambitions
When asked about Belgium's chances of lifting the trophy for the first time in the country's history, Doku struck a determined but grounded tone.
"Everyone will say that we want to win this tournament, and I'm not going to be different. Everybody has that desire — to be the Belgium we used to show, and see how far we go. We know we're not the favourites, but maybe that will work in our favour."
He closed with a statement of total commitment: "We want to leave without any regrets — so that if we leave, we've given everything we have. Whatever is in my power, I'll do it."
Belgium open their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Egypt, a match that carries weight for African football fans watching closely on both sides.
