Ecuador President Declares National Holiday After Historic World Cup Win Over Germany
Ecuador president Daniel Noboa has proclaimed Friday a national holiday in celebration of La Tri's stunning 2-1 comeback victory over Germany at the FIFA World Cup 2026, a result that secured their place in the knockout rounds.
The triumph marks only the second time in Ecuador's history that they have advanced past the group stage at a World Cup — the first occasion being their memorable run at Germany 2006.
Ecuador's remarkable turnaround
Few would have predicted this outcome after Ecuador collected just one point from their first two group matches. Things grew worse in the opening minutes when Leroy Sane fired Germany ahead after only two minutes, converting from a lay-off by Florian Wirtz.
Sebastian Beccacece's side refused to fold. Seven minutes later, Nilson Angulo restored parity, calmly slotting past Manuel Neuer following a precise through-ball from Pablo Vite.
With the clock running down, Gonzalo Plata delivered the decisive blow 13 minutes from the final whistle, sending Ecuador into the last 16 as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
Noboa celebrates the nation
Taking to X, president Noboa praised both the players and the coaching staff for their resilience in the face of fierce criticism throughout the tournament.
