Egypt Hold Belgium to a Hard-Fought Draw in FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G Opener

Egypt claimed a hard-earned point at the FIFA World Cup 2026, holding Belgium to a 1-1 draw in Seattle on Monday in a Group G encounter that the Pharaohs could — and perhaps should — have won outright.
Ashour breaks the deadlock
Egypt took the lead in the 19th minute through Emam Ashour, who produced one of the early goals of the tournament. Collecting a measured pass from captain Mohamed Salah, Ashour found space on the edge of the area and unleashed a fierce, long-range effort that beat Thibaut Courtois at the bottom corner.
Belgium, ranked among world football's elite, found Egypt a far sterner test than many anticipated. The Pharaohs' defensive organisation was disciplined throughout, while Salah, Omar Marmoush, and Mostafa Zico posed a persistent threat on the counter-attack. Goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir commanded his penalty area with authority whenever Belgium did threaten.
A stroke of misfortune swings the tie
Egypt came close to doubling their lead shortly after half-time. Salah's intelligent movement carved out space inside the penalty area, and his downward header drew a fine save from Courtois. Marmoush also went close moments later, driving through the Belgian backline before being denied.
Belgium levelled in the 66th minute, though fortune played a significant part. Following the introduction of Romelu Lukaku, a dangerous delivery from the right flank caused confusion in Egypt's penalty area, and Mohamed Hany turned the ball into his own net under pressure.
The Pharaohs did not retreat after the setback. Egypt continued to threaten and came close to reclaiming the lead in the closing stages. Shobeir then produced a superb late save to deny Brandon Mechele and keep the scores level, ensuring his side left Seattle with a point.
What comes next
The result is a creditable one for Egypt against a nation of Belgium's standing. The seven-time African champions return to FIFA World Cup 2026 action on Monday, 22 June, when they face New Zealand at 01h00 GMT.
