Egypt Make History as Pharaohs Reach FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for First Time

Egypt scripted a historic moment on Friday, becoming the second African nation to advance to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after edging Australia 4-2 on penalties, following a tense 1-1 stalemate that stretched to extra time in Dallas.
The Pharaohs have never previously progressed past the FIFA World Cup knockout play-off stage — Friday's result eclipses every previous Egyptian appearance at the global tournament and sets up a mouth-watering last-16 clash against either defending champions Argentina or Cape Verde.
Ashour fires Egypt ahead
Egypt took control from the opening exchanges, and Emam Ashour gave them a deserved lead in the 13th minute. Karim Hafez recycled a Mohamed Salah free-kick and delivered a precise cross to the far post, where Ashour met it with a powerful header. It was his second goal of the tournament, and it reflected Egypt's dominance in the opening half as the seven-time African champions dictated the tempo.
Australia hauled themselves level in the 55th minute, though in unfortunate circumstances. Mohamed Hany, attempting to clear a dangerous free-kick, saw his defensive header loop over his own goalkeeper and settle in the net — an own goal that levelled matters at 1-1.
Extra time and shootout drama
The additional 30 minutes mirrored the pattern of the match, with Egypt creating the better opportunities. Salah spurned a golden chance from close range, and the Australian defence — anchored by Souttar and Beach — repeatedly repelled the Pharaohs to ensure the game went to penalties.
The shootout was a roller-coaster. Harry Souttar blazed Australia's opening kick over the crossbar, handing Egypt an early advantage after Mahmoud Saber converted coolly. Jackson Irvine and Rami Rabia both scored before Awer Mabil brought Australia level at 2-2.
Then came the moment of the night. Salah stepped up and produced a perfectly executed Panenka to restore Egypt's lead — a statement of nerve under the highest pressure. Teenage Australian Lucas Herrington then struck the crossbar, leaving Egypt needing one more successful kick to make history.
Hossam Abdelmaguid delivered, slotting his penalty with composure to trigger wild celebrations among Egyptian players and supporters. The final shootout score read 4-2, and the Pharaohs had written their name into FIFA World Cup history.
Egypt will now face either Argentina or Cape Verde in the Round of 16, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
