England Fans Praised for 'Excellent' Behaviour at World Cup Despite Rise in Domestic Incidents

2 hours ago·1 min

England supporters travelling to the United States for the World Cup have received high praise from police for their conduct, with authorities reporting no violence or disorder involving England fans on American soil.

The UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) confirmed that five England supporters were arrested by American authorities, but only two of those arrests took place at a World Cup match. All five have since been released and referred back to the UKFPU.

Domestic incident numbers climbing

Back home, however, the picture is more complicated. A total of 463 football-related incidents have been recorded in England and Wales — a notable increase compared to the same stage of Euro 2024, when 304 incidents were logged, and the 2022 World Cup, which produced 291.

Of those 463 incidents, 162 occurred in licensed premises, while 109 were classified as domestic incidents, typically involving family members over the age of 16. Eighty-eight people have been arrested in connection with football-related offences at home — up from 66 during Euro 2024 and 56 during the 2022 World Cup.

Arrests in England and Wales often fall under the Public Order Act and can cover a wide range of anti-social behaviour, including swearing, shouting, intimidation, and violence.

Scotland fans also praised

Scotland supporters making the trip to the United States have also been commended for their behaviour, though their statistics are reported separately and are not included in the UKFPU's current figures.

Chief constable Mark Roberts, head of the UKFPU, expressed satisfaction at how both sets of supporters have conducted themselves.
