Eric Chelle Handed New Contract and U-23 Eagles Role

Nigeria's Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle will continue in his role after the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) reached agreement on a new contract, NSC chairman Shehu Dikko confirmed on Tuesday.

Dikko made the announcement following a joint meeting between NSC and NFF officials in Abuja, where the future direction of Nigeria's national teams was on the agenda.

Improved terms agreed

Chelle's original two-year deal was set to run out at the end of 2026. Reports had indicated the Mali-born tactician sought a monthly package of $130,000 — an amount intended to cover the salaries of his backroom staff as well as his own remuneration.

Dikko confirmed that both parties have agreed in principle, with the NFF expected to finalise the paperwork. "We have agreed new terms with the coach pending when the NFF will put it on paper," he said. "We are going to increase his money and take care of his assistants that are helping him."

Chelle to oversee U-23 Eagles

Beyond the Super Eagles, Chelle will also take charge of the Nigeria U-23 national team — a decision designed to create a seamless pathway from youth football to the senior side.

"We can see the young players already coming to the Super Eagles who are products of the future," Dikko explained. "Instead of having different ideas, let's have ideas from the U-23 to the Super Eagles, so Eric Chelle and his team would add one or two people to support them."

Building toward 2030

The NSC chairman framed the restructuring as part of a broader long-term plan, with Nigeria targeting sustained success at the Africa Cup of Nations and beyond. Dikko stressed the need to learn from shortcomings and begin laying the groundwork immediately.

"The objective is we have to build for 2030 now — start bringing in the young ones who would join the team and put the blocks and the foundation in place," he said.

Nigeria finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a result that kept Chelle in the conversation for continuation despite the team falling short of the final.
