Europe's Youngest Top-Flight Manager Carlos Cuesta on Arteta, Arsenal, and Building Parma

5 hours ago·1 min

At 30 years old, Carlos Cuesta holds a distinction few could have predicted: he is the youngest head coach in Europe's top five leagues. After five years as Mikel Arteta's assistant at Arsenal, he made the leap into management last summer, taking charge of Parma in Serie A — and steering them to a 13th-place finish in his debut season.

Cuesta's journey into coaching began unusually early. He retired from playing at 18 and enrolled in a sports science degree, but his ambition was always the dugout. To accelerate his path, he took the bold step of contacting staff at Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid through social media, which eventually led to a volunteering role with the youth sides at Atletico.

He later worked with youth teams at Juventus before landing his role as Arteta's assistant at Arsenal, a partnership that would define the early chapters of his career.

Praise for Arteta

Cuesta speaks about his former mentor with unmistakable admiration — while being careful not to overstate his own contribution to Arsenal's recent successes.
