Eustáquio's Late Strike Sends Canada Into Round of 16 as South Africa Exit World Cup

Stephen Eustáquio struck deep into second-half injury time to hand Canada a 1-0 victory over South Africa in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32, sending Les Rouges into the next stage of the tournament.
The goal — a fierce finish into the corner of the South African net after Eustáquio latched onto a loose ball — proved to be the decisive moment in a tense, hard-fought contest.
A historic night for Canadian football
The victory is the first knockout-stage win in Canadian football history. It also makes Canada the first World Cup co-host ever to compete in — and win — an elimination game played on foreign soil.
The match itself carried additional historical weight: it was the first game of the newly created Round of 32, a product of the tournament's expansion to 48 teams, making this edition of the FIFA World Cup 2026 the largest in the competition's history.
South Africa frustrate, but Canada find a way
For much of the match, Canada dominated possession and looked the more threatening side, yet South Africa's disciplined defensive line repeatedly denied them. On several occasions, Canadian efforts were cleared off the line as the Bafana Bafana protected their goal with determination.
South Africa were far from passive, however. They posed a persistent threat on the counterattack and succeeded in frustrating Les Rouges for the better part of 90 minutes — until Eustáquio's moment of brilliance finally broke the deadlock.
What comes next for Canada
Canada will now face either Morocco or the Netherlands on July 4 in Houston, with a place in the last 16 firmly in their sights. For South Africa, the tournament ends at the first hurdle — but their performance in holding Canada at bay for so long will offer some consolation to their supporters.
