Everton Stun Newcastle with Barry Winner as Ramsey Sees Red

1 hour ago·2 min

Everton claimed their first away league win of the season with a composed 1-0 victory at St James' Park on Monday, leaving a lacklustre Newcastle United side to be booed off the pitch at both half-time and full-time.

Thierno Barry's 49th-minute goal settled the contest, capping a miserable evening for Matthias Jaissle's side that was compounded in stoppage time when substitute Jacob Ramsey received two yellow cards in just 86 seconds to be shown a red card.

Barry's killer blow

The decisive moment arrived when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall played a sharp quick free-kick to release Tyrique George, whose low shot squirmed beneath goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. Barry was on hand to tap into an empty net — a finish that Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe described as the product of "truly shocking" defending and "terrible goalkeeping."

Everton should have led before the interval, with Barry and Harrison Armstrong both squandering clear first-half chances. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was blunt in his assessment of the home side, calling Newcastle "poor."

Newcastle toothless in attack

The Magpies offered little in response. Anthony Elanga struck the post in the 66th minute — their clearest opportunity — and it was not until the 85th minute that Newcastle registered their first shot on target, through substitute Yoane Wissa. Five minutes later Wissa forced a solid save from Jordan Pickford, but the damage had already been done.

Ramsey's dismissal in the 98th minute — two bookings in rapid succession — made an already difficult evening even darker for Newcastle, who have now lost four of their last five matches across all competitions. The home supporters made their feelings clear with loud boos at both whistles.

Double blow in four days

The defeat is Newcastle's second at the hands of Everton in the space of four days, following their 3-1 Carabao Cup fourth-round loss at Goodison Park on Thursday. That run of form sees them drop to 13th in the Premier League table.

For Everton, victory lifts David Moyes' side to seventh, and marks their first away league success since a win at the same St James' Park ground back in February.

Grealish absent again

Jack Grealish was once again absent from the Everton squad, with the club listing him as "not match fit." The 31-year-old had been omitted from Thursday's Carabao Cup tie following a breach of club discipline after missing a training session. He was also unavailable for Everton's 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on October 24, although that absence was attributed to illness.

Grealish is currently on a second successive season-long loan from Manchester City, having made six appearances for Everton this season. During his previous loan spell, he contributed six assists and scored two goals in 20 appearances before a season-ending foot injury ended his campaign in January.
