Ex-Manchester United Captain Valencia Tips Isak and Gyökeres for World Cup 2026 Golden Boot

3 days ago·2 min

Antonio Valencia, the former Manchester United captain, believes Swedish forwards Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres have what it takes to challenge for the Golden Boot at FIFA World Cup 2026.

The endorsement comes after both strikers delivered commanding performances in Sweden's 5-1 Group F victory over Tunisia on Sunday, with each finding the net.

Valencia's take on the Golden Boot race

Speaking to Hajper, Valencia was clear in his admiration — but also candid about the challenges ahead. "Yes, I can see Viktor Gyökeres fighting for the Golden Boot. He has had a good season and a good Champions League, but we know there are also other interesting players who have done things well," he said.

Valencia described the competition for the award as unusually tight this year. "I think it will be very difficult this year. The World Cup will also be like a battle to see who wins it. It is very even. I hope these players continue at that level, because as fans we really enjoy watching them."

Heat and tactical demands could reshape striker roles

The ex-Manchester United captain raised an intriguing point about how the tournament's conditions may affect the way strikers operate. He suggested the heat and pitch conditions would force forwards to adapt their game significantly.

"I think strikers will want to play more with their backs to goal and have more of the ball. Because it is going to be very hot, I do not think a striker will make 20 runs in behind the defence in one match," Valencia explained.

"They will have to control their movement more, hold the ball up more and be very intelligent in this tournament. So it could suit Gyökeres more."

What's next for Sweden and Tunisia

Sweden face the Netherlands on June 20, a match that could further test Isak and Gyökeres on the world stage. Tunisia, meanwhile, meet Japan on the same day as they look to recover from their heavy Group F defeat.
