Ezri Konsa Sits Out England Training in Load Management Measure

1 hour ago·2 min

Arsenal fans endured a nervous few hours during the international break after England confirmed that defender Ezri Konsa had been kept away from full group training ahead of the squad's departure for Prague.

The Football Association's official update stated:

"Ezri Konsa and Nico O'Reilly are following their own individual programmes at Tottenham Hotspur's training ground this morning. All other 22 players are involved in group training ahead of the squad departing for Prague this afternoon."

Why Arsenal should not panic

The absence of any central defender from main training during an international window is enough to trigger concern among supporters, but the circumstances here point toward precaution rather than crisis.

Konsa was not sent back to his club — the clearest possible signal that no serious injury has occurred. Had he sustained meaningful damage, Arsenal's medical staff would have recalled him immediately for scans and a formal evaluation at the Emirates.

Crucially, Konsa travelled with the England squad to Prague, meaning Thomas Tuchel's coaching staff regard him as available or close to available for the Nations League fixtures ahead.

Load management behind the decision

Modern sports science allows medical teams to track fatigue indicators, biometric data, and workload metrics in granular detail. With Konsa having accumulated a significant volume of minutes throughout 2026, the decision to place him on an individual programme almost certainly reflects a proactive effort to reduce injury risk before any problem arises on the pitch.

Tailoring a player's training load during a congested schedule is now standard practice at the elite level — it is a measure designed to keep players available, not to flag them as injured.

Arsenal's defensive concerns remain real

That said, manager Mikel Arteta will monitor developments with a careful eye. Arsenal's defensive resources are already stretched: William Saliba remains sidelined for an extended spell, and Jurrien Timber has also been absent in recent weeks.

A packed run of Premier League and European fixtures awaits Arsenal after the international break. Arteta cannot afford another setback in his backline, making Konsa's fitness a matter of genuine importance to the club's season.

For now, the signs are encouraging. Konsa's individual programme appears to be a sensible precautionary measure, and Arsenal will be hoping he returns to London fit and unscathed after England's remaining Nations League matches.
