Fans Warned Not to Travel to France vs Iraq World Cup Match Due to Severe Weather

yesterday·1 min

Supporters planning to attend Monday's World Cup Group I match between France and Iraq at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia have been urged not to travel to the stadium, as severe weather sweeps the area.

Organisers warned of heavy rain, thunder, and lightning in the region ahead of the fixture, which is the 42nd match of the tournament. Kick-off is scheduled for 17:00 local time (22:00 BST).

Lincoln Financial Field issued a statement on X confirming the gates will not open on time. "Due to inclement weather in the region, gates opening will be delayed," the venue said. "If you are not in the area, please do not travel to Philadelphia Stadium at this time."

The stadium also asked those already nearby to seek shelter immediately: "A new gates opening time will be communicated once the weather has passed. If you are near Philadelphia Stadium, please take shelter."

Lightning protocol in place

Under the tournament's safety regulations, if lightning is detected within eight miles of the stadium, play will be suspended for 30 minutes and spectators escorted to designated safe zones.

With three hours remaining before kick-off, rain was falling heavily across the city. As of the latest update, no official announcement had been made regarding a delay to kick-off — meaning this match could become the first at the 2026 World Cup to start late.
