Federal Government and Allen Onyema Set to Immortalize Stephen Keshi on NIIA Wall of Fame

Ten years after his passing, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi is set to receive two landmark tributes in 2026 — a memorial lecture in Lagos and a permanent place on Nigeria's most prestigious sports diplomacy monument.
A weekend of remembrance for Nigerian football legends
As Nigeria farewells Henry Onyemanze Nwosu on Sunday, June 7, 2026, in Naze near Owerri, the football community is simultaneously turning its attention to another icon of the same era. A foundation established by Keshi's friends and family will host the 10th annual Stephen Keshi Memorial Lecture at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Lagos on the same day.
The event marks the first of two major commemorations planned for the man widely known as the Big Boss.
Keshi's name inscribed in gold on the NIIA Wall of Fame
On July 28, 2026 — one day before the tenth anniversary of Keshi's death on July 29, 2016 — his name will be engraved in gold letters on the NIIA Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame. The inscription will place him among 70 Nigerian sporting heroes whose names are permanently enshrined on the monument.
The ceremony and the expansion of the wall to accommodate Keshi's name will be funded by Dr. Allen Onyema and his airline, AirPeace.
What the NIIA Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame is
The Wall of Fame is a national monument established by the NIIA, a federal government agency, to honour Nigerians who have made significant contributions to the country's international political and diplomatic objectives through sport. Set within the NIIA grounds in Lagos, the structure features water fountains, a garden, and a black marble wall carrying the names of Nigeria's sporting icons.
The monument was erected three years ago, with Dr. Allen Onyema and AirPeace providing the sponsorship.
Keshi's case for the honour
Keshi captained the Nigerian Green Eagles and later coached the national team to an Africa Cup of Nations title. He also guided Togo to the FIFA World Cup, and throughout his career he opened doors for a generation of Nigerian and African footballers making the transition to professional football in Europe. The NIIA has identified, assessed, and approved his contributions to Nigeria's sports diplomacy as fully meriting a place on the wall.
Other athletes under consideration
The NIIA's sports diplomacy department is also reviewing several other Nigerian athletes for future inclusion on the wall. Among those being considered are world record holder Tobi Amusan, Olympic gold medallist Chioma Ajunwa — the first and only Nigerian woman to win Olympic gold — and the Atlanta '96 Dream Team, the Olympic gold medal-winning football squad.
Crucially, selection for the Wall of Fame is not determined by sporting achievement alone. Candidates must have made a demonstrable impact in Nigeria's international diplomatic and political agenda through their sporting activities.
