Bologna captain Lewis Ferguson has revealed that a move to Rangers remains a personal ambition, even after choosing to stay in Italy following a summer of transfer speculation.

The 27-year-old Scotland international attracted interest from Rangers during the transfer window, a period he described as prompting serious reflection. "I had a long think about my future and what that was going to look like and, in the end, it was still at Bologna," he said. "I've loved every moment that I've had there, so it was about continuing that journey and see where it takes me."

Ferguson acknowledged that a concrete move to Ibrox never materialised into anything imminent. "I was a little bit unsure but nothing was ever really that close to be honest," he admitted ahead of Scotland's UEFA Nations League fixture against Switzerland.

A childhood dream he won't let go

The midfielder, who came through Rangers' youth academy, made clear that his affection for the Ibrox club runs far deeper than professional interest. "It's no secret I grew up a [Rangers] fan. That's absolutely no secret. My family is involved in the club, and it was an aspiration of mine, a dream of mine as a kid and that's not changed," he said.

However, Ferguson was careful to draw a line between his personal feelings and his professional obligations. "I don't want to speak about that while I'm still a player at Bologna. I've got too much respect for them, but in the future you never know. It might happen, it might not, but it's always been something in the back of my mind."

Commanding role at Bologna

Since opting to remain in Serie A, Ferguson has been a cornerstone of Bologna's campaign. He has started and captained the side in every Serie A match of the current season — a marked contrast to his more limited involvement last term. With two years still remaining on his contract at Bologna, the club retains firm control of his future for now.

Ferguson will turn his attention to international duty in the short term, as Scotland host Switzerland in a UEFA Nations League match on Tuesday night.
