FIFA Bans Egypt Coach Hassan and Zico for World Cup Referee Criticism

1 hour ago·2 min

FIFA has handed three-match and five-match suspensions to Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan and forward Mostafa Zico respectively, after both men publicly accused the referee of wrongdoing following Egypt's round-of-16 exit at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed the sanctions on Monday, citing a statement from the FIFA Disciplinary Committee. Hossam's twin brother Ibrahim Hassan, who serves as the national team's manager, also received a three-match ban.

The EFA said it had formally requested the committee's detailed reasoning behind the decisions and is assessing the legal grounds for a potential appeal.

What the bans mean for Egypt

The suspensions carry immediate consequences for Egypt's upcoming schedule. Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan could be barred from the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Malawi in November, as well as Egypt's first match of the March international window. Zico faces the steeper penalty — he will remain ineligible until June.

The match that sparked the controversy

Egypt took on Argentina in the round of 16 on July 6 in Atlanta, United States, in what became one of the most contentious matches of the tournament. The Pharaohs raced into a 2-0 lead, only for the defending champions to mount a stunning comeback and advance.

A Zico goal was disallowed in the second half — when Egypt were leading 1-0 — after VAR spotted a foul on Lisandro Martinez earlier in the move. Zico then doubled the lead, putting Egypt on the brink of a first-ever quarterfinal appearance. But Cristian Romero pulled one back for Argentina before Lionel Messi, who had a first-half penalty saved, struck the equaliser — his eighth goal of the tournament.

Argentina's winner, scored by Enzo Fernandez, was itself surrounded by controversy. Egypt argued they should have been awarded a penalty beforehand for an Alexis Mac Allister pull on Hamdy Fathy, a moment that was never reviewed by VAR.

A member of Egypt's coaching staff was red-carded in the aftermath of the winning goal, adding further fury to an already incensed camp.

Hassan's post-match outburst

Hossam Hassan made no attempt to temper his frustration at the post-match news conference.
