FIFA Dismiss Match-Fixing Claims Over Algeria vs Austria World Cup Draw
FIFA have decided against launching an investigation into claims that the World Cup group-stage match between Algeria and Austria was deliberately manipulated, according to reports from Mirror.
The two nations played out a dramatic 3-3 draw in their final group fixture, a result that sent both sides through to the knockout rounds. Critics suggested the outcome was engineered, pointing to the manner in which Austria scored a 96th-minute equaliser — a goal that arrived after a five-minute build-up and 110 consecutive passes.
Mahrez's late goal at the centre of the storm
Riyad Mahrez had given Algeria the lead in the 93rd minute, only for Austria to immediately hit back in extraordinary fashion. The goal could have eliminated Austria, and tensions on the touchline visibly escalated, with Marko Arnautovic seen gesturing angrily toward the Algerian bench.
In the final standings, Ralf Rangnick's Austria finished second in the group, while Algeria came third — both advancing to the last 16. Sceptics argued Algeria effectively allowed Austria back into the game with the final kick of the match.
Despite the controversy, FIFA are understood to have dismissed the allegations entirely and have no intention of pursuing the matter further. Austria manager Rangnick has also firmly rejected the suggestion of any wrongdoing.
Mahrez's candid admission adds fuel to speculation
Mahrez, however, did little to silence the chatter when he acknowledged the closing moments had felt unusual. The former Manchester City winger was candid in his post-match comments.
