The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened formal proceedings against the Argentinian Football Association and several players following a series of incidents at the FIFA World Cup 2026, including events during the tournament's final between Spain and Argentina.

Charges against the Argentinian Football Association

The Argentinian Football Association faces proceedings for potential breaches of multiple articles of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The charges relate to discriminatory chants and gestures from players and supporters, late kick-offs, failure to comply with match and security protocols, the display of inappropriate messages, and the throwing of objects by spectators across several of Argentina's matches at the tournament.

The specific articles cited include those covering demonstrations of a non-sporting nature at a sports event, team misconduct, discrimination and racist abuse, and failures in order and security at matches.

Individual proceedings following the final

Following a report from the appointed Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor regarding the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, the committee opened proceedings against a number of individuals for alleged assault under article 14 paragraph 1 i) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

Argentinian midfielder Leandro Paredes faces three counts of assault, while defender Nahuel Molina faces two counts — one completed and one attempted. Argentinian official Roberto Ayala has been cited on one count of assault.

Additionally, Molina and fellow Argentinian player Thiago Almada each face one count of unsporting behaviour under article 14 paragraph 1 b). Spanish player Pablo Martín Páez Gavira has also been cited for one count of the same offence in connection with the final.

What happens next

In line with the FIFA Disciplinary Code, all respondents have been given the opportunity to present their positions before the committee. A formal decision is expected to be issued in due course.
