Daniel Bameyi, the former Flying Eagles captain, has completed a transfer to Finnish club FC Inter Turku, continuing his journey through European football.

The 20-year-old defender arrives in Finland after a brief stint with Slovenian club ND Primorje, where he made six appearances in the Slovenian top flight. That move to Primorje from Nigerian academy Yum-Yum FC came in September 2025 and marked his European debut at club level.

Bameyi is a versatile operator capable of playing at centre-back, right-back, and in defensive midfield. He will initially feature for Inter Turku's reserve side, Inter 2, who compete in the Finnish Ykkönen. The club confirmed that his signing is designed to bolster the reserve team as the season enters its most critical phase.

A decorated career at youth level

Few Nigerian youngsters of his generation have collected as many milestones as Bameyi. He captained the Flying Eagles at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina, leading Nigeria to the quarter-finals before a defeat to South Korea after extra time.

That same year, Bameyi was part of the Nigeria squad that secured third place at the 2023 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.

Two years on, he retained the captaincy for the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Egypt, guiding Nigeria to another third-place finish and earning a spot in the tournament's Best XI — recognition of his consistent influence at the back.

At the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, Bameyi stepped forward in the most dramatic fashion, converting a stoppage-time penalty to seal a 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia. Nigeria reached the Round of 16 before their campaign ended.

Eyes on the first team

Beyond the age-grade circuit, Bameyi has also trained and featured with Nigeria's U-23 side and the senior national team, underlining the regard in which the country's coaches hold him.

The move to FC Inter Turku offers the defender a platform to continue his development in Europe, with a pathway to the Finnish club's first team very much in sight.
