Liverpool are monitoring Cody Gakpo's fitness after the Dutch winger picked up an ankle injury during the Netherlands' 2-1 victory over Serbia, a result that got new Oranje head coach Xavi Hernandez's international tenure off to a winning start.

Gakpo sustained the knock following a heavy challenge by Serbia midfielder Sasa Lukic and was substituted in just the 17th minute, having initially attempted to play through the pain. The Netherlands subsequently confirmed that he would play no further part in the international break.

Xavi cautiously optimistic on Gakpo's prognosis

Speaking after the win in Belgrade, Xavi expressed measured hope that the injury is not serious. "It's his ankle, that's all I know," the Spaniard said. "Tomorrow we will know, but hopefully it's not too important."

Gakpo returned to Anfield to undergo a scan on the ankle, with Liverpool expected to receive a clearer picture of the full extent of the damage in the coming days.

A costly blow for Iraola's Liverpool

The timing could hardly be worse for Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola. Gakpo had been one of the Reds' standout performers this season, contributing four goals and assists across just five Premier League matches. He also scored and set up a goal in Liverpool's Carabao Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month, appearing equally effective on both flanks.

The 27-year-old came close to leaving Anfield in the summer, attracting interest from Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, but ultimately stayed on Merseyside. His value on the right wing has been particularly significant given Liverpool's lack of a natural wide option on that side following the departure of Mohamed Salah.

Gakpo's absence could, however, hand an opportunity to summer recruit Victor Munoz to make his mark in the first team. Liverpool are already without Federico Chiesa and Hugo Ekitike through injury, and Alexander Isak is also dealing with a minor thigh complaint.

Liverpool face Manchester City when Premier League action resumes following the international break — a fixture that now looms larger with Gakpo's fitness in doubt. Transfermarkt values the forward at €60 million.
