Garnacho Left Out of Chelsea Pre-Season as Club Pushes for Sale

Alejandro Garnacho was absent from Chelsea's opening pre-season training sessions on Thursday as the club makes clear it is actively looking to move the Argentine winger on this summer.
The 21-year-old did not report to Cobham alongside the first-team squad members not involved in the World Cup, underscoring his uncertain standing at Stamford Bridge after a difficult debut campaign.
A season to forget
Garnacho arrived at Chelsea from Manchester United in a £40 million deal signed on a seven-year contract, but the move failed to deliver the expected returns. He scored just one Premier League goal across 24 appearances — ten of which came from the bench — struggling to hold down a regular starting role under managers Enzo Maresca and then Liam Rosenior.
Chelsea are valuing Garnacho at approximately £43 million (50 million euros) and will only consider permanent transfers, despite reported loan interest from Serie A side Roma. Premier League clubs, European outfits, and Saudi Arabian sides are also said to be tracking the winger, with talks reportedly progressing with several parties. Any eventual sale will see Manchester United collect 10 percent of the fee as a sell-on clause.
Xabi Alonso reshapes the squad
Garnacho's exclusion is part of a broader overhaul being carried out under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso. The club have already moved decisively in the transfer market, bringing in full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £47 million and winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting for £40 million.
On the outgoing side, left-back Marc Cucurella has departed for Real Madrid in a £52 million deal, while winger Tyrique George has joined Everton for a fee that could reach £24 million.
Chelsea are continuing to strengthen their defensive options, with Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix among the centre-back targets, and Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria in discussions over a move to west London. Trevoh Chalobah is also expected to leave, with his representatives holding talks with Serie A clubs Inter Milan and Como.
The club, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season, are set to embark on a pre-season tour of Australia and Asia within the next fortnight.
