Germany Set to Complete Perfect Group Stage Against Ecuador

Germany enter their final Group E fixture at the FIFA World Cup 2026 having won both of their opening games, and Julian Nagelsmann's side are firmly in control of the group. Ecuador, meanwhile, arrive with just one point and in desperate need of a result.
Germany's defensive frailties on show
Despite the positive results, Germany have looked vulnerable at the back throughout the tournament. A concentration lapse against Curacao and a first-half goal conceded against Ivory Coast — which Germany had to overturn — mean that 40-year-old Manuel Neuer has not kept a clean sheet at a World Cup since the 2014 final. An injury to Nico Schlotterbeck adds further concern to a backline already under scrutiny.
Nagelsmann is expected to use this match as a rotation opportunity, with Deniz Undav's recent form making him a strong candidate to start. Jamie Leweling, Angelo Stiller, and Max Beier could also feature, with Beier offering a wide-forward option Germany have largely not deployed. Much of their attacking width has come from Nathaniel Brown operating at full-back.
Ecuador's creative drought
Ecuador's problems are the mirror image of Germany's. Piero Hincapie and Willian Pacho have kept the defence solid, but a near-total absence of creative or clinical play in the final third has cost La Tri dearly — a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast and a goalless draw with Curacao have left them on the brink of elimination.
With nothing to lose, Ecuador must attack, and there is hope that Chelsea loanee Kendry Paez could be handed a chance to make an impact from the start. But opening up against a Germany side capable of punishing teams on the counter could prove costly.
Match prediction
With Germany already qualified and likely to rotate, this contest is expected to be tight and low-scoring. As Ecuador abandon defensive caution in pursuit of a result, Germany should find space to break — much as they did against Ivory Coast. A narrow German win appears the most probable outcome.
Prediction: Germany 1-0 Ecuador
