Ghana Beaten by Croatia but Black Stars Advance to World Cup Knockouts

2 hours ago·3 min

Ghana suffered their first loss of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday, going down 2-1 to Croatia in Philadelphia — yet the Black Stars still march into the knockout rounds after securing their place earlier in the group stage.

The defeat allowed Croatia to climb above Ghana in Group L, with Zlatko Dalic's side claiming the runners-up spot and a round-of-32 fixture against the second-placed team from Group K. Ghana, who had already guaranteed progression, drop to third but remain in the competition.

Croatia set the tempo early

Croatia came into the match knowing even a draw could keep them alive as one of the best third-placed sides, but they showed no interest in leaving their fate to chance. From the first whistle, Dalic's team pressed with conviction and denied Ghana any rhythm in possession during the opening half-hour.

A warning came in the 17th minute when Nikola Vlasic drove a right-footed shot against the outside of the post from around 20 yards. The breakthrough followed in the 31st minute — Petar Sucic collected the ball deep and unleashed a fierce strike from 30 yards that flew through attempted blocks and nestled just inside the left post.

Ghana struggle to find their footing

The Black Stars, who had impressed with their defensive discipline in earlier group outings — including a goalless draw with England — found it difficult to establish themselves against Croatia's pressing intensity. Their midfield was starved of the ball for long stretches, and the front line received limited service.

Antoine Semenyo provided Ghana's most dangerous moments in the first half, using direct running to trouble the Croatian backline whenever the Black Stars broke forward. He came closest to an equaliser shortly before the interval, firing narrowly wide. Croatia, however, remained the more composed and threatening side going into the break.

Luckassen draws Ghana level

Ghana came out with far greater intent after half-time. Carlos Queiroz's side pushed higher, moved quicker, and began to put the Croatian defence under genuine pressure. That persistence paid off in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen reacted quickest to a free-kick into the area, finding space inside the box and side-footing home a composed equaliser.

The goal briefly swung momentum back towards Ghana and raised the possibility of the Black Stars preserving their unbeaten group record. It was another display of the resilience Queiroz's team had shown throughout the group stage.

Vlasic punishes sloppy marking

The lead lasted just ten minutes. Luka Modric delivered a corner into the area, and Vlasic — the man who had hit the post earlier — found space to direct his header off the inside of the left post and into the net. It was a painful blow for Ghana, who had worked hard to draw level only to be undone by the same set-piece vulnerability that had hurt them at the other end.

Croatia managed the remaining minutes calmly, slowing the game and protecting their advantage. Ghana pushed for a second equaliser but could not manufacture a clear chance to rescue a point.

Black Stars must reset for the knockouts

The Group L campaign is over for Ghana, ending on a deflating note after what had been a disciplined and resilient run. The Black Stars had collected four points from their opening two matches — defeating Panama and drawing with England — to secure their passage into the round of 32 before this fixture.

Saturday's defeat, though, carries lessons. Ghana will need sharper midfield control, more cohesive attacking play, and greater concentration at set-pieces if they are to challenge deep into the knockout stage. The margins from here will be unforgiving — and the Black Stars know it.
