Ghana Hold England to a 0-0 Draw in World Cup 2026 Group L Opener

yesterday·2 min

Ghana secured a hard-fought point against England, holding the Three Lions to a goalless draw in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L encounter in Boston on Tuesday.

Under manager Carlos Queiroz, the Black Stars were disciplined and resolute at the back, weathering wave after wave of English pressure to walk away with a deserved share of the spoils.

Rice rattles the woodwork

England's clearest opportunity of the first half came through Declan Rice, whose looping header struck the crossbar and stayed out. It was a moment that summed up England's struggles to find a way through a well-organised Ghana defence.

After the break, Elliot Anderson and Anthony Gordon both squandered promising chances for England, while goalkeeper Benjamin Asare produced a superb save to deny Harry Kane and keep the Black Stars level.

Konsa's goal-line heroics

Ghana's best moment arrived 10 minutes from time when Abdul Fatawu surged forward and threatened to break the deadlock. Ezri Konsa recovered to block his initial effort, and when Fatawu attempted to convert the rebound, Antoine Semenyo inadvertently blocked the ball just short of the goal line — a moment of cruel fortune for Ghana.

England pushed forward in the final minutes in search of a winner. Reece James delivered a dangerous cross to Nico O'Reilly, whose header from the back post clattered the crossbar for the second time in the match. The ball dropped to Kane, but the England captain sent his effort soaring well over the target.

A point that means plenty

The draw leaves both sides level on one point in Group L. For Ghana, it represents an encouraging start — a clean sheet and a point against one of the tournament's stronger sides is no small achievement. England, meanwhile, will be frustrated having created the better opportunities without finding the net.
