Ghana's Black Stars Hold England to a Goalless Draw at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Ghana's Black Stars delivered a defensive masterclass at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, holding England to a 0-0 draw at Boston Stadium to move to four points from two matches in Group L.
Carlos Queiroz organised his side in a disciplined 4-5-1 shape that suffocated England throughout and left Thomas Tuchel's possession-heavy approach without reward. It was not eye-catching football, but it was a result that keeps Ghana firmly in contention for the round of 32.
A wall England could not breach
England arrived with momentum, having beaten Croatia 4-2 in their opener, but found Ghana a far sterner test. Queiroz's block denied the opposition space between the lines, forcing them to build in front of a Ghanaian defensive wall that barely budged.
Tuchel's side managed six first-half shots, none of them on target. Declan Rice's looping header over the crossbar was their best effort before the break — a telling indicator of how little England truly threatened.
Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was composed throughout. In the second half, he repelled efforts from Elliot Anderson, Anthony Gordon, and Harry Kane, with Bukayo Saka also forcing a low save late in the match. Marvin Senaya, Jonas Adjetey, Jerome Opoku, and Gideon Mensah stood resolute in front of him, repelling wave after wave of English pressure.
Ghana go close to a famous win
The Black Stars were not merely passengers. Their most dangerous moment arrived with fewer than 10 minutes remaining, when a clinical counter-attack sent Abdul Fatawu clean through on Jordan Pickford. Ezri Konsa recovered to block the first attempt, and Fatawu's follow-up was then inadvertently stopped close to the line by team-mate Antoine Semenyo.
Ghana also appealed loudly for a penalty after Prince Adu was brought down in the area by Konsa, but the referee waved play on — a decision that left the Ghanaian bench furious.
England's late surge falls short
England's clearest opportunity came in the 87th minute when Reece James delivered from the right and substitute Nico O'Reilly met the cross at the back post, only for his header to bounce back off the crossbar. Kane then struck the loose ball high over the bar from a promising position. In stoppage time, Marc Guehi saw a header cleared off the line as Ghana survived one last wave of pressure.
Qualification in Ghana's own hands
With four points apiece, both Ghana and England will enter their final group fixtures with everything still to play for. The Black Stars — who beat Panama in their opening match — face Croatia on 27 June, knowing a draw will be enough to advance to the knockout stage.
For Queiroz, it was a performance that demonstrated tactical intelligence and mental fortitude. Ghana proved that progress at a World Cup does not always require attacking brilliance — sometimes, resilience and structure are enough.
