Gordon's Ballon d'Or Dreams and Barcelona Belief Drive Him Into El Clasico

1 hour ago·3 min

Anthony Gordon is living one of football's most glamorous weeks — Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, El Clasico against Real Madrid on Sunday, and the Ballon d'Or ceremony in between. The Barcelona winger is thriving at the centre of it all.

Gordon, 23, has made no secret of his personal ambitions. Speaking to reporters during a recent England camp, he laid out his long-term vision with striking clarity.

"I've always dreamt of that since a kid. I've never had a limit on what I can do in life because I understand that the people who are there at some point weren't there. I believe anyone can achieve anything they put their mind to — they just need a lot of luck."

His Barcelona club-mate Lamine Yamal and England captain Harry Kane are the ones in contention at Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony. Gordon, however, is focused on putting himself in that conversation one day.

"Things like that are about preparation. When preparation meets luck you get that kind of opportunity. So I'm trying to do everything I can to be the best player I can be. Hopefully I get a lot of luck and then we'll see."

A surprise signing who has proven his worth

Barcelona's decision to spend £69.3 million on Gordon in May raised eyebrows — particularly when England team-mate Marcus Rashford had been available for £26 million after a successful loan stint. The fee signalled an enormous belief in Gordon's ceiling, and the winger has repaid that faith rapidly.

He delivered two assists on his Barca debut in August, won over the Spotify Camp Nou crowd from the start, and went on to enjoy a standout FIFA World Cup with England — scoring in the semi-final against Argentina and cementing his place ahead of Rashford as his country's first-choice left winger.

Back in LaLiga, he has registered four assists in 10 appearances. After the most recent international break — during which he scored three goals in three games for England, including a memorable breakaway strike against Spain — he added his first two goals for Barcelona.

Evolution in the Spanish game

Gordon is open about the differences between life at Newcastle United under Eddie Howe and his new reality at Barcelona. The game he is playing now is a different kind of demanding.

"I played in a completely different style under Eddie Howe. We played a really intense back-and-forth. It was always quite exciting, whereas at Barca the intensity is more slow because we control the ball so much. I pride myself on having a high football IQ and making the right decisions. Going to a team like Barcelona has really suited me — and it's maybe highlighting strengths that people didn't know I had or maybe overlooked."

His statistics back him up. With Barcelona dominating possession in most matches, Gordon is getting on the ball more frequently and creating more chances. His numbers for shots, chances created, take-ons, and passing have all risen since his move from the Premier League. The one drop-off — crossing — simply reflects Barcelona's contrasting style to Newcastle United.

Manager Hansi Flick has also taken note. "He has speed. He can control the ball. He helps us a lot with his dribbling, always being able to create chances," the Barcelona coach said.

A mouth-watering attack takes on Real Madrid

Gordon, alongside fellow new arrival Karim Adeyemi, has given Flick a reliable option down the left flank. Their presence has allowed Raphinha to operate as a centre-forward, where he has posted remarkable goal returns. On the opposite side, Gordon believes Lamine Yamal is the finest winger in world football at this moment.

It all sets the stage for a Clasico at the Spotify Camp Nou that Real Madrid's defenders will approach with serious concern. When the world tunes in on Sunday, Gordon will have the chance to announce himself on the grandest domestic stage in football.
