Jack Grealish made a surprise return to the Manchester City first team on Sunday, coming off the bench at half-time during their 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal in Cardiff — his first appearance for the club since a substitute role against Bournemouth in May 2025.

The 30-year-old replaced Jeremy Doku on the left wing with City already two goals down, and played the full second half. He completed 21 of 24 passes and delivered a couple of threatening crosses, offering a glimpse of the form that once made him one of English football's most coveted players.

BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Pat Nevin offered measured praise: "Looking at him out there now, he's in good nick. He's not going beyond players, but he's trying to create space and he's actually put a couple of very good crosses in."

A career that lost its way

Manchester City paid £100 million to sign Grealish from Aston Villa in 2021, and he repaid a portion of that faith by contributing to the club's historic Treble in 2022-23, featuring in the Champions League final victory over Inter Milan.

However, his influence faded sharply thereafter. He made only 10 Premier League starts in 2023-24 as Jeremy Doku overtook him in the pecking order, and then managed just seven league starts in 2024-25 before being excluded from City's Club World Cup squad entirely. His most recent of 39 England caps arrived in October 2024.

A loan spell at Everton last season offered some early hope. Under David Moyes, Grealish claimed the Premier League player of the month award for August after producing four assists in his first three league appearances. "He's made a big difference. It's just the start for Jack," Moyes declared at the time. But that bright start faded, and a foot injury in January ended his season early.

What new boss Maresca said

New City manager Enzo Maresca was measured but non-committal after Sunday's defeat. "Overall, Jack was good," he said. "The ones that are still here, they are going to work every day, and if they deserve it they are going to get minutes. The transfer window is open and we will see what happens."

Maresca's words leave the door open — but only slightly. The consensus is that Grealish, despite this cameo, is more likely to leave the Etihad than cement a long-term place in City's plans.

Where could Grealish go?

Everton remain interested in bringing Grealish back on loan, though the Toffees declined to make last season's temporary deal permanent — reportedly due to City's £50 million asking price. BBC Radio Merseyside reporter Giulia Bould noted that Grealish has made no secret of his affection for the club, with Everton still listed in his social media bio. His recovery from January foot surgery will be the key factor in any potential return.

A sentimental homecoming to Aston Villa — now competing in the Champions League — has also been mooted. BBC Radio WM presenter Daz Hale made the case: "There is a real romance of the return of the prodigal son. He is still a wonderful talent and adds real personality to a football team. It is a Champions League season again for Villa, they need to have strength in depth — I think he would be an asset."

An overseas move also looms as a possibility, with several outlets reporting that Atletico Madrid and coach Diego Simeone have shown interest.

With a year left on a reported £300,000-a-week contract and the transfer window open for another fortnight, the clock is ticking. Sunday's cameo may have been Grealish's audition — either for a renewed role at City or for a new chapter elsewhere.
