Gusto Eyes Starting Spot as France Squad Competition Heats Up

Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto has made clear that he intends to fight for a starting berth in the France squad at the FIFA World Cup 2026, refusing to accept a bit-part role despite fierce competition within Didier Deschamps's ranks.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the 23-year-old acknowledged that Jules Koundé currently holds the first-choice position at right-back, but insisted that his sole purpose in the squad is to play.
"We know we have a squad of very high quality and competition is important. I know Jules starts. I came here to play, that's why I'm here. The coach makes his choices. I'll be ready whatever happens and I'll give everything for the shirt whenever I'm on the pitch."
Gusto also revealed that he has not yet spoken directly with Deschamps about his role, but remains committed to staying sharp and seizing any opportunity that arises.
"Honestly, I haven't spoken to the coach yet. My role is mainly to be ready. I didn't start the first match, so I have to stay focused and I know that when the coach puts me on the pitch, I'll give everything and I'll make sure I show that I can play and that I can be in the starting 11."
The Chelsea defender left no doubt about his ambitions, adding: "My mindset is that I'm in the squad and I want to play. As a player, you want to take part. These are the competitions that drive me."
France's World Cup campaign so far
France opened their Group I campaign with a 3-1 victory over Senegal, though a laboured first-half display suggested Deschamps may have reason to rotate his options. That result has given fringe players such as Gusto an opening to press their claims.
France are next scheduled to face Iraq in Philadelphia in their second Group I fixture.
