Gvardiol Signs New Manchester City Contract Until 2031

Josko Gvardiol has agreed a new long-term contract with Manchester City that will keep him at Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031, sources have confirmed to BBC Sport.
The 24-year-old defender's previous deal had been due to run until 2028, but this extension puts an end to rumours linking him with moves to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
BBC Sport had reported last week that City were encouraged by the direction of negotiations, with talks moving forward on positive terms.
World Cup preparation under way
Gvardiol is currently with the Croatia squad, gearing up for the FIFA World Cup 2026. His tournament could open with a compelling storyline — Croatia face England in their opening group fixture on Wednesday, a match that will pit Gvardiol against several of his Manchester City team-mates.
A disrupted but decorated season
Despite a campaign hampered by injury, Gvardiol claimed Manchester City's player of the season award for 2024-25. He managed just 25 appearances across all competitions after fracturing his leg in January, sidelining him for roughly four months.
The Croatian international is comfortable operating at centre-back or left-back. He worked his way back to fitness in May, contributing 58 minutes in a Premier League clash against Crystal Palace before featuring in the final 12 minutes of City's last league outing of the season against Aston Villa.
