Haaland Declared Fit for Manchester City's Trip to Anfield

56 minutes ago·2 min

Erling Haaland is set to feature for Manchester City when they travel to Anfield this Sunday, manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed, easing concerns that had emerged over the international break.

The Norwegian striker was substituted during Norway's clash with Portugal after coach Stale Solbakken cited "extreme strain" as the reason for withdrawing him. Haaland started all four of Norway's fixtures during the break, prompting City supporters to fear the worst ahead of the marquee Premier League encounter.

Maresca, however, moved to calm nerves at his pre-match press conference.

"He's good. He went to Marbella, had two or three days off, played golf, [and recovered]. [Haaland is] ready for Anfield. He's good, thank you."

The Italian also reflected warmly on his squad's return to training, noting that the players had benefited from some time away before refocusing for the busy period ahead.

Form and stakes at Anfield

Haaland arrives at Anfield in devastating form, having scored five goals in five Premier League appearances — all of which Manchester City have won. He also netted a brace in City's opening UEFA Champions League group fixture against Porto.

The significance of this match extends beyond the result. It is Manchester City's first Premier League outing since an independent commission found the club guilty on all charges related to breaches of the league's financial rules across a nine-year period — a verdict that has dominated headlines across the football world.

Injury concerns for Maresca

While Haaland's availability is a major boost, Maresca is still managing a handful of injury concerns elsewhere in his squad. Antoine Semenyo, who would likely deputise for Haaland in the event of an absence, faces a late fitness test ahead of the game.

Phil Foden is unavailable through suspension, having received a red card in the Manchester Derby last month, while Nico O'Reilly is also facing a late fitness test after withdrawing from England duty during the break.

Manchester City's busy schedule continues next week when Paris Saint-Germain visit for the second matchday of the UEFA Champions League.
