Hassan Targets History as Egypt Gear Up for Belgium World Cup Opener

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has made clear that reaching the FIFA World Cup 2026 is only the beginning — his side intends to leave a lasting mark on the tournament.
Hassan brings a rare dual perspective to this campaign. He represented Egypt at the 1990 FIFA World Cup as a player and now leads the Pharaohs from the dugout, making his drive to deliver something historic deeply personal.
Egypt's ambition on the world stage
"Reaching the World Cup as a player and coach is a great thing," Hassan said ahead of Egypt's tournament opener against Belgium. "Egypt should take its rightful place in football. Back in 1990, I think we did something good although we did not follow it through."
"We played well, came close to going through but it was not meant to be. So I hope, God willing, we can finally go through," he added.
Egypt are Africa's most decorated football nation, holding a record seven Africa Cup of Nations titles. Yet, for all that continental success, the Pharaohs have never advanced beyond the group stage at a FIFA World Cup — a milestone Hassan is desperate to reach.
The coach is acutely aware of what this tournament means to Egyptians at home and abroad. "The idea of football in Egypt is not to be taken lightly. It's not just a game, it's life. Whenever Egyptians see the Egyptian flag, they rally around it every time, especially when it comes to football. What matters to me is living up to the expectations of Egyptian people and fans," Hassan said.
Salah at the heart of Egypt's hopes
Hassan was effusive in his praise for captain Mohamed Salah, describing him as one of the finest players on the planet.
"Mohamed Salah has broken countless records around the world," the coach said. "He is one of the best players in the world and I hope he scores more than me. The most important thing is for us to win and score goals for Egypt."
With Salah leading the charge and Hassan drawing on decades of experience with the national team, Egypt head into their clash against Belgium carrying the weight — and the hope — of an entire nation.
