Jordan Henderson has completed a move to Chelsea on a two-year contract, arriving as a free agent after his deal with Brentford was mutually terminated. The veteran England midfielder becomes the ninth signing of the summer under new manager Xabi Alonso.

A decorated career

Henderson, 34, enjoyed the peak of his career at Liverpool, where he captained the club to the Premier League title in 2019-20. During his time at Anfield he also lifted the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, the League Cup on two occasions, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

After leaving Liverpool in 2023 for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, he moved to Dutch club Ajax in January 2024 before returning to English football with Brentford last summer. He made 32 Premier League appearances for the Bees in 2025-26.

"Given the size of the club, the manager [Xabi Alonso] who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn't turn down," Henderson said. "For me, it's about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I'm very excited to get going."

England record and World Cup heartbreak

Henderson began his career at Sunderland, where he made his Premier League debut as a substitute in a 5-0 defeat to Chelsea on 1 November, 2008 — a fitting detail given his latest destination. He has since earned 91 England caps, first representing the Three Lions in 2010, and featured in seven major international tournaments, including the Euro 2021 final, which England lost on penalties to Italy.

This summer Henderson made history by becoming the first Englishman to appear at four different World Cups, coming on as a late substitute in England's 2-0 group-stage win over Panama. However, that proved to be his only outing of the tournament. In bizarre circumstances, he suffered a broken arm after falling awkwardly while attempting to jump over the advertising hoardings following England's 3-2 last-16 victory over Mexico — a match he had not even featured in. He had also received a booking during that game for protesting a refereeing decision while warming up on the sideline.

Chelsea's busy summer

Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season, one point and one place behind Brentford, and missed out on European football entirely. Xabi Alonso has wasted no time reshaping the squad, with Henderson joining a growing list of new arrivals at Stamford Bridge.

The club's most significant piece of business was a club-record £117 million deal for England midfielder Morgan Rogers, 23, from Aston Villa. Veteran England striker Danny Welbeck, 35, also arrived from Brighton & Hove Albion in a reported £5 million move on Saturday.

Defender Maxence Lacroix, 26, signed from Crystal Palace for £52 million, right-back Marco Palestra, 21, arrived from Atalanta for £42 million, and right-winger Geovany Quenda joined from Sporting for £40 million. The remaining new faces are striker Emmanuel Emegha, 23, from Strasbourg, left-back Denner, 18, from Corinthians, and 17-year-old striker Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty.
